Success occurs at the intersection of Preparation and Opportunity

I’m delivering a big marketing keynote speech at Foxwoods Resort and Casino this week. How did I win this?

Preparation comes first

Here’s what I did in preparation:

  1. I created a compelling keynote speaker page
  2. I created a slick looking professional profile

As a result, I looked like a highly professional marketing keynote speaker to anyone searching for one.

Along comes Opportunity

One day in January 2014 a manager went to his assistant, Jennifer, and said “We need a really good keynote speaker for our big company meeting in April. Please find one for me.”

She started searching using Google and soon found Jeff Ogden, the award-winning marketing expert and creator and host of Marketing Made Simple TV. She started looking at what he’s been doing.Marketing Made Simple TV

She goes back to her boss and says “I really like this guy, Jeff Ogden. He looks VERY impressive.” Her boss agreed and they contacted me. (Note, Talk to Jeff is featured on my keynote speaker page, so contacting me is easy.)

Yesterday, they asked for my professional profile, so the boss can practice introducing me.  I sent what I had previously done. They LOVED it.

If this is not proof that success is the intersection of preparation and opportunity, then nothing is.

What do you think? Have you ever experience anything like this?

Just over week till my big keynote address at Foxwoods Casino and Resort

Servpro hired Jeff Ogden to be the keynote speaker at their big company meeting at Foxwoods next week.

I’m looking forward to doing much more keynote speaking in 2014. Thankfully, this client is 100% committed to helping me grow my speaking career. They will provide a photographer at this event.ServPro

Here’s why I have zero interest in attending your marketing conference

No, I’m NOT going to attend your marketing conference.

While lots of people need marketing advice, I’ve done over 150 Marketing Made Simple marketing conferenceTV show with the leading business minds in the world. In addition, I’ve been blogging about marketing for over 7 years too. And I’m a popular keynote speaker on marketing too.

Take content marketing for instance.

I’ve done more than 5 shows with the leading content marketing experts in the USA, like Joe Pulizzi of the Content Marketing Institute, Jon Weubben, author of Content is Currency, as well as Jay Baer, author of the #1 blog on content marketing. And all those guests sent me their great books too, which I read.

So why do you want me to pay to attend your content marketing conference? Do you really think you can teach me anything new?

You can’t.

This is why I no longer attend marketing conferences - unless I’m speaking.

What do you think? I love to read your comments and appreciate those who share on social media too.

Sent my Logo to our Keynote speaking client

If you were asked for a company logo, what would you say?

The $1.4 billion firm who hired me to deliver their marketing keynote talk requested my company logo, so they can start promoting my upcoming keynote at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in early April.ServPro

I sent two - one for the nicest company in B2B marketing today, Find New Customers, and the other for the hugely popular and syndicated show, Marketing Made Simple TV.

This got me to thinking. Very, very few people are doing what I am doing. Two questions came to mind.

  1. What percentage of people have ever stood up in front of a microphone and delivered a keynote speech and entertained hundreds of people?
  2. What percentage of people have ever created logos that they could send?

I don’t know the numbers, but I’m in rare company, it seems.

What do you think? We love comments and those who share on social media. Also, if you sent a tweet to me at @fearlesscomp, I will answer every single one.
