TrustTwo websites with almost identical names. One ends in .net and one ends in .com.

Which is the hero and which is the charlatan?

Who is the company behind Exhibit A? Would you trust a company that failed to identify itself? That stuffs a webpage with keywords? That claims to be an independent CRM Software News, Views and Reviews, but is not. That is FindNewCustomers dot net.

The real company behind it is a sleazy little Florida software company called A P L I C O R. They sell CRM sofware, but you would not know that from their website. It is pretending to be a CRM advice site, but it actually from a vendor. In my opinion a vendor site has little credibility, but a vendor site pretending to be something else is not trust-worthy at all.

On the other hand, www.findnewcustomers.com is the one and only true home of the lead generation company Find New Customers. If you are looking for leads generation, look no further. If you need a great marketing strategy, we’re your team. Social media marketing - ditto.

We put our contact info on every page and stuff it full of great content on B2B marketing, which we give away for free, such as our white paper on B2B lead generation, How to Find New Customers.

So I ask you

Which is the hero and which is the charlatan?

At the Aprimo Marketing Summit, I had a chance to take a close look at the Aprimo Lead Management offering. I was able to grill them with questions that trip up many vendors. With my experience in B2B lead generation and marketing automation, I felt confident I could give them challenging questions.

I found a very strong and graphical offering for lead management. It offered a great interface, flexibility and adaptation to buyer behaviors. I found it well-designed and flexible. (But you sure better sketch it out on a white board BEFORE you try to create it in Aprimo Lead Management.)

It is clear that Aprimo belongs with the top marketing automation vendors, such as Eloqua, Marketo and Silverpop.

“If we just do _____________, everything will be fine”


“We need someone who knows Eloqua and Salesforce and has recently implemented it.”

“We need someone with industry knowledge so we can get fast results.”

“We don’t have time to bring in a leads generation consultant. We need results now.”

If it were that easy to crank up B2B lead generation, savvy companies like Eloqua, Kinaxis, Amazon and Zappos would be a dime a dozen. They are not. They are rare. Every one of these comments is wrong.

Marketing is very hard. Software is just a tool and not a means to an end. You’ll want to do social media marketing and implement great marketing strategies too.

You need a sea change in thinking. You need deep insights on your markets and buyers. You need to craft stories and build solid processes, like comprehensive lead nurturing programs. And you need clear lead definitions and lead scoring. It all starts with a solid foundation of buyer personas and buying processes.

There’s no quick fix. But each and every day, senior execs and marketing leaders look for the quick fix. They are sadly mistaken.

In all, you need to really do it differently. As my good friend, Jim Burns, CEO of Avitage said, patience is needed in content marketing. Even if you do it perfectly, nothing happens for a couple of quarters.
